Escape Rooms for Families in Montreal

Solve Puzzles Together

Escape rooms are one of the best family activities you've probably never tried. They require teamwork, communication, logic, and creative thinking — and kids are often better at them than adults. Montreal has a thriving escape room scene, and several venues offer rooms specifically designed for families. Here's what you need to know.

The Best Family-Friendly Venues

A/Maze in Old Montreal is widely considered one of the best escape room companies in Canada. Their rooms are elaborately designed with Hollywood-quality sets. For families, their "Pirate Island" room is the standout — designed for ages 8+ with puzzles that challenge both adults and kids without being frustratingly difficult. Groups of 4-6 work best. Sessions are 60 minutes and cost $28-32 per person. The game masters are excellent at providing age-appropriate hints.

What makes A/Maze special is the production quality. You're not just solving padlocks in a decorated room — you're in an immersive environment with sound effects, lighting changes, and surprise elements. Kids feel like they're in a real adventure.

Défi Évasion has locations across greater Montreal (Laval, South Shore, downtown). They explicitly market family rooms and offer several scenarios rated for ages 7+. Their rooms are well-maintained and the puzzle difficulty is carefully calibrated. At $22-28 per person, they're slightly more affordable than downtown competitors. Their "Space Station" and "Lost Temple" rooms are family favourites.

SOS Labyrinthe in the Old Port is technically a maze, not an escape room, but it deserves mention. This massive indoor labyrinth challenges families to navigate through themed rooms, find clues, and solve puzzles to find the exit. It's less intense than a traditional escape room, making it perfect for families with younger kids (ages 5+). Admission is $14-18, and most families complete it in 45-60 minutes.

How to Succeed as a Family Team

  1. Divide and conquer — Have kids search low areas while adults check high shelves and walls
  2. Communicate constantly — Share every discovery out loud, no matter how small
  3. Let kids take the lead — They often spot things adults overlook
  4. Don't be afraid of hints — Using hints isn't cheating; it keeps the experience fun
  5. Watch the clock together — Time awareness adds excitement without panic

What Kids Learn

Escape rooms teach valuable skills:

  • Critical thinking — Puzzles require logic and deduction
  • Teamwork — No one person can solve everything alone
  • Communication — Sharing information effectively is essential
  • Persistence — Working through frustration to find solutions
  • Observation — Noticing details others miss

Booking Tips

  • Book the first time slot of the day — Rooms are freshly reset and you're more alert
  • 4-5 players is ideal for families — too many people makes it chaotic
  • Minimum age is usually 8 — Younger kids can attend but may lose interest
  • Tell the venue it's a family group — Good game masters adjust their hint style for kids
  • Arrive 15 minutes early — Most venues require a briefing before the game
