Cat Cafés and Animal Experiences for Kids in Montreal

Kids and Animals: A Perfect Match

Most children are naturally drawn to animals, and spending time with them teaches empathy, gentleness, and respect for living creatures. Montreal offers several unique animal experiences beyond the traditional zoo — here are the best ones for families.

Cat Cafés

Café Chat L'Heureux on Boulevard Saint-Laurent is Montreal's original and best-loved cat café. The concept is simple: enjoy a coffee or snack while hanging out with 8-10 resident rescue cats in a cozy lounge setting. The cats are free-roaming, well-socialized, and most are very friendly with children.

Important rules for families: Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times and must be gentle with the cats. The café enforces quiet voices and no chasing — which is actually great practice for teaching kids respectful animal interaction. Kids under 5 may find the "hands-off until the cat comes to you" approach challenging, so this works best for ages 5+.

Entry costs $8-10 per person for one hour (includes a drink). Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends. They also sell cat-themed merchandise — popular souvenir gifts for kids.

Why it's worth it: Beyond the cute factor, cat cafés are genuinely calming. All the cats at Café Chat L'Heureux are rescues, which opens a meaningful conversation with kids about animal adoption and care. Some cats are available for adoption through partner rescue organizations.

Other Animal Experiences

Ecomuseum Zoo in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue is Quebec's only outdoor zoo featuring exclusively animals native to the St. Lawrence Valley. Kids see wolves, bears, otters, lynx, and birds of prey in naturalistic habitats. It's smaller and more intimate than a big zoo, which actually works better for young children. Admission is about $20 per adult, $12 per child.

Biodôme in the Olympic Park recreates four ecosystems of the Americas — tropical forest, Laurentian maple forest, Gulf of St. Lawrence, and sub-Antarctic islands. Kids walk through each environment encountering penguins, monkeys, porcupines, and thousands of species. One of Montreal's must-visit attractions. Around $22 per adult, $11 per child.

Papillons en Liberté (Butterflies Go Free) at the Montreal Botanical Garden runs annually from February to April. Thousands of tropical butterflies fly freely in a warm greenhouse while kids try to spot different species. A wonderful winter escape. Included with Botanical Garden admission ($21 adult, $10 child).

Horseback Riding

For animal lovers who want a more active experience:

  • Centre Équestre Lakeshore offers pony rides for young children and riding lessons for ages 6+
  • Ranch D.A. in the Laurentians (1 hour north) offers family trail rides through beautiful forests

Teaching Kids About Animals

Use these experiences as jumping-off points for deeper learning:

  1. Read about the animals before your visit — kids engage more when they know what to look for
  2. Discuss habitat and diet — turn observations into science conversations
  3. Talk about conservation — many of these organizations are involved in rescue and conservation
  4. Follow up at home — borrow animal books from the library after your visit
