Best Nature Parks in Montreal for Wildlife Watching with Kids

Wild Montreal: Nature Parks for Wildlife Watching

You don't need to leave the island of Montreal to have incredible wildlife encounters. The city's network of nature parks preserves thousands of hectares of forest, wetland, and shoreline habitat, supporting a surprising diversity of birds, mammals, and reptiles. Grab your binoculars, pack some snacks, and head out for a family wildlife adventure.

Top Parks for Wildlife

Parc-nature du Cap-Saint-Jacques is Montreal's largest nature park at 336 hectares, located on the western tip of the island. The park is home to white-tailed deer, red foxes, coyotes, and over 150 species of birds. The maple forest trails in spring are especially magical — listen for woodpeckers drumming and warblers singing. The park also has a working organic farm where kids can see farm animals up close.

  • Best time to visit: Early morning, year-round
  • Key species: White-tailed deer, great blue heron, red-tailed hawk, barred owl
  • Facilities: Washrooms, picnic areas, sugar shack (spring)

Parc-nature du Bois-de-Liesse spans 159 hectares of mature forest and wetlands in the west end. The Étang boardwalk trail is perfect for spotting turtles, frogs, and waterfowl with young children — the elevated walkway keeps little feet dry and provides excellent viewing angles. In winter, animal tracks in the snow make for a great tracking lesson.

  • Best time to visit: Spring and fall migration seasons
  • Key species: Painted turtles, wood ducks, great horned owl, mink
  • Facilities: Interpretation centre with nature exhibits, accessible trails

Parc-nature de l'Île-de-la-Visitation along the Rivière des Prairies is one of the best bird-watching spots on the island. The great blue heron colony here is spectacular from April through August. The park's trails follow the riverbank, offering excellent vantage points for watching herons, kingfishers, and occasionally beavers at dusk.

  • Best time to visit: April-August for herons; year-round for other species
  • Key species: Great blue heron, belted kingfisher, beaver, muskrat
  • Facilities: Historic buildings, picnic areas, seasonal bistro

Wildlife Watching Tips for Families

  1. Be quiet and patient — wildlife appears when you sit still
  2. Bring binoculars — even inexpensive ones make a huge difference for kids
  3. Download a bird ID app — Merlin by Cornell Lab is free and excellent
  4. Wear neutral colours — bright clothing can scare animals away
  5. Visit at dawn or dusk — animals are most active during these times
  6. Stay on trails — protects both wildlife habitat and your family's safety
  7. Keep a nature journal — let kids draw and record what they see

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring (April-May): Bird migration, maple sap season, frog chorus at wetlands
  • Summer (June-August): Heron nesting, turtle basking, butterfly gardens
  • Fall (September-October): Hawk migration, deer rutting season, spectacular foliage
  • Winter (December-March): Animal tracks, owls, overwintering birds at feeders
