Baby and Toddler Activities in Montreal (0-3 Years)

The Tiniest Montrealers Need Fun Too

Finding activities for babies and toddlers can feel overwhelming. Most kids' activities are designed for ages 4+, leaving parents of the youngest children wondering what to do beyond stroller walks and playground visits. Good news: Montreal has a growing scene of programs designed specifically for the 0-3 age group. Here are the best.

Water Babies

Aquababy offers parent-and-baby swimming programs starting as early as 4 months old. Classes take place in warm pools (heated to 32°C — warmer than typical public pools) and focus on water comfort, safety, and parent-child bonding. Watching a 6-month-old splash and giggle in the pool is pure joy.

Sessions run 30 minutes (perfect for short baby attention spans) and cost about $15-18 per class. Programs progress through levels: Water Babies (4-12 months), Water Tots (1-2 years), and Water Kids (2-3 years). Each level introduces more independence in the water. Bring a swim diaper (mandatory) and a warm towel for afterward.

Indoor Play Spaces

Le P'tit Village in the Plateau is one of the few indoor play spaces specifically designed for children under 5. The imaginative play village includes a mini grocery store, kitchen, doctor's office, and other pretend-play stations sized for tiny hands and bodies. It's clean, safe, and thoughtfully designed.

Entry is about $15 per child, and parents play for free. Weekday mornings are the best time to visit — it's quieter, and many regular parents form informal parent groups. They also host birthday parties for toddlers.

KidZillafun in Dollard-des-Ormeaux has a dedicated toddler zone separated from the bigger-kid areas. This is important — toddlers and energetic 8-year-olds don't mix well on the same play structure. The toddler area has soft play elements, a small ball pit, and age-appropriate climbing features. About $12 per toddler.

Music and Movement

Kindermusik programs run at several Montreal locations and are specifically designed for ages 0-3. Using songs, movement, and simple instruments, these 45-minute classes stimulate brain development while building social skills. Research shows music education in the first three years of life has lasting positive effects on language development. Sessions cost about $150-200 for 10 weeks.

Baby Gym at YMCA — Several YMCA locations run "Parent and Tot" gym sessions where babies and toddlers explore soft obstacles, tunnels, and mats in a safe gym environment. Typically $5-10 per session for members.

Library Programs

Montreal's public library system runs free programs for babies and toddlers:

  • Bébés à la biblio (Babies at the library) — Stories, songs, and rhymes for ages 0-18 months
  • Heure du conte (Story time) — Interactive storytelling for ages 18 months to 3 years
  • These programs are free but registration is often required. Check bibliomontreal.com for schedules at your local branch.

Parent Groups and Drop-Ins

Parenting a baby or toddler can be isolating. These drop-in centres provide social connection for both parents and kids:

  • Maisons de la famille — Each borough has family centres with free drop-in playgroups
  • NDG Community Council runs parent-toddler groups with facilitators
  • La Maison Bleue offers perinatal and early childhood programs in several neighbourhoods

Seasonal Ideas

  • Spring/Summer: Wading pools (free, most parks), stroller walks along the Canal, picnics at Parc Lafontaine
  • Fall: Leaf-crunching walks on Mount Royal, apple picking (babies love wagon rides)
  • Winter: Indoor play spaces, library programs, baby swimming
